Keep Your Home Comfortable All Year Whether You’re in Sun City or Not

Air Shield understands that there are many snowbirds in addition to our all year citizens here in Sun City Center. We understand the varying needs of someone who is in their home all the time and the person who leaves their home vacant for half the year.

We offer HVAC maintenance programs that keep your home free of mildew and mold and keep the system running strong even when you’re out of state. Since it’s hot for most of the year here in Sun City, having a running AC with a dehumidistat system is important to keep the air quality and health of your home all good.

What’s a Dehumidistat and Why Do You Need One?

This is a device that controls the humidity levels in your home by communicating with the thermostat to change the temperature. It is perfect for Florida snowbirds that leave their Florida home for long periods.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Conditioning in Sun City Center

What temperature should I keep my thermostat set at?

To save the most on energy costs and wear and tear on your machine, 78 degrees or higher is recommended. Some people are not comfortable at this temperature but do your best to keep it there for as much time as possible during the day.

For most people, the temperature is more important at night, so, keep your system at 78 during the heat of the day and turn down the AC in the evening so it won’t have to work so hard to maintain it.

Every degree below 78 will cost you more in energy cost though, so that’s something to consider.

When I go out of town, or away for the summer, what should I set the thermostat at?

Some people might be tempted to turn the system off, but this would be a big mistake. You definitely want to keep the system running.

It should be set on 82 for the majority of the day but have the system either on a dehumidistat or timer to have it run at 72 degrees for at least two hours a day.

This will help keep the humidity levels of your home at the correct levels and cut down on mold and mildew production. But it will also keep your AC operating costs to the bare minimum, essentially pennies per day.

What’s the difference between a timer and a dehumidistat?

A timer runs at a specific time of the day. The dehumidistat will turn on anytime the relative humidity goes above the setting you’ve programmed. 65 degrees of relative humidity is a good setting to keep it at.

If I close my vents in rooms I’m not using, will that save money?

It’s not recommended to close the vents. The cost savings are negligible and the air balance throughout the home will be imbalanced which will raise the relative humidity and can cause mold problems.

Keep all the vents open and clean for your system to run at its highest efficiency.
